Bedford Railroad Day

August 19, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Friends of Bedford Depot Park invite you to

BEDFORD RAILROAD DAYSaturday, August 19, 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Bedford Depot Park

Early in the morning of August 4, 1873, the first Middlesex Central Railroad passenger train arrived in Bedford and departed a few minutes later for Boston. To mark this pivotal moment in Bedford’s history, the Friends of Bedford Depot Park will host “Railroad Day,” a celebration of the 150th anniversary of what was the beginning of a century of rail service to Bedford.

Activities for both adults and children are planned in and around the vintage Boston & Maine Railcar and adjacent Freight House welcome center at Depot Park, located at 120 South Rd., at the corner of South Rd. and Loomis St. (the Bedford terminus of the Minuteman Bikeway.) Light refreshments will be provided in the Railcar, and all “Railroad Day” activities are open to the public and free of charge.

Schedule of activities:

1:00:   A guided walk of about one mile with author and historian William Deen around what was once the Bedford railyard. Meet at the picnic area behind the Bedford Depot building (through the parking lot at 80 Loomis St.)

1:00-4:00:   Ongoing activities for kids: Special arts and crafts, Lego building, and scavenger hunt. Depot Park plaza, Railcar and Freight House

1:30 and 2:30:   Train stories in the Railcar.

3:00:  William Deen will give a slide talk about the early history of the railroad and what it meant to Bedford. In the Railcar.

The Freight House welcome center and Railcar, with their operating model railroad and museum displays, will be open as usual that day from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
