It’s Time Now to Nominate the  2024 Bedford Citizen of the Year

Since 1979 Bedford has continued the tradition of naming its Citizen of the Year, chosen by a confidential committee.  The person chosen (and one year it was a couple) is honored by riding in the Bedford Day parade, being celebrated at a reception coupled with the annual Bedford Minutemen Change of Command Ceremony,  and participating in Pole Capping Day and the annual tree lighting on the Common.

Nomination forms are available now and must be received by Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Please see the Citizen of the Year webpage (https://www.bedfordma.gov/288/Citizen-of-the-Year) for the nomination form, guidelines, and a list of past winners. Paper copies of the nomination form are available at Town Hall, the Council on Aging, and the Library.

Guidelines to be Considered:

  • Time spent and benefit resulting to the Town in general (can cover any time period; can be supported by additional letters or endorsement of others)
  • Town affiliations and organizations (a current resident of the Town of Bedford; experience with all Town organizations, including not-for-profit organizations or volunteer groups that benefit the Town; elected officials may not be selected while holding office; Town employees’ honor may not be associated with their current position; prior services should be considered: either elected, voluntary, or appointed; Town positions or committees)
  • Individual contributions that benefit the Town of Bedford.

Bedford’s first Citizen of the Year in 1979 was Louis Smith, father of Art Smith.

In 2023, the honoree was Angelo Colao.  And in a sampling from the past, you will likely recognize these winners:
1986- Fay Russo
2009 – Joseph Piantedosi
2013- Ralph Hammond
2021- Lois and Brown Pulliam
