Senior Jonny Garraway and the girls’ and boys’ four-by-800-meter relay teams were the local headliners at last week’s MIAA Meet of Champions, bringing together the qualifiers from all track and field divisions at Fitchburg State University.
Garraway concluded a stellar Massachusetts career by finishing eighth in the 800-meter run, in a time of one minute, 56.81 seconds, earning a medal. He also placed 20th in the mile run in 4:24.77.
The girls’ relay team placed 10th, covering the 800 in nine minutes, 44.73 seconds. The quartet of Grace Niu, Farrah Scott, Anna Massaro, and Zadie Buckley broke the 10-year-old school record by more than six seconds.
Also setting a school record was the boys’ relay team of Oren Brosgol, William Protasowicki, Carter Rauch, and Garraway. Their time of eight minutes, 6.72 seconds was almost eight full seconds ahead of the mark set by the same foursome at the Division 4 state meet. The relay team finished 17th in the Meet of Champions.
Both relay teams have qualified to compete in the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, OR next week. This event is outside the BHS athletics program, though participants can use their performances at high-school meets to meet the qualifying standards.
Other highlights at the Meet of Champions include Madeline McInnis placing 13th in the 100-meter in a time of 12.53 seconds and 16th in the 200-meter in 25.95. Rauch also took 23rd in 800 with a time of 2:03.09 and Buckley finished 28th in 800 in 2:21.98.
If their times are declared to qualify, Garraway, McInnis and the relay teams will compete in the New England Outdoor Track Meet, scheduled for Friday.
