The Bedford High School boys’ tennis team brought another trophy home Saturday afternoon, defeating Dover-Sherborn 3-2 to earn a slot in the MIAA Division 3 Final Four.
Bedford will face Swampscott High Monday at Concord-Carlisle High School, with the winner advancing to the state championship next Saturday. Monday’s match is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
Jeremy Gu, who graduated from BHS less than two days earlier, clinched the win for Bedford before 2 p.m. on the Wedgewood Club courts.
Gu, playing second doubles, won consecutive 6-4 sets. Coach John Geilfuss was emphatic about Gu’s clutch toughness. “He saved the day for us,” said the 29-year BHS coach. Gu is the only senior on the team.
The afternoon began with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph by the second doubles due of Leo Natalizio and Charles Demeo. Spencer Goss and Logan Cox, first doubles, prevailed in straight sets as well, 6-3, 7-5.
Meanwhile, first singles Dillon Denny-Brown battled Max Glick for more than two hours, with Glick winning a tie-breaker long after the overall match had been decided.
Asked how many times his squads have qualified for the Final Four, Geilfuss said he couldn’t remember.
Swampscott, the third seed, defeated Gloucester to qualify for the state semifinals. The semifinal match of the other side of the bracket will pit top-seed Weston and Apponequet Regional of Lakeville.
