The Bedford Senior Babe Ruth Baseball team opened their summer season on the road Sunday night in Malden. Bedford lost the contest but had a unique mid-game interruption.

Bedford and Concord have successfully combined forces over the past few years to form some combined summer league teams. The Bedford Senior Babe Ruth team is made up of 16 to 18 year old players from Bedford, Hanscom, and Concord.

Sunday’s game was at risk from the very start, with tornado warnings posted for Middlesex County. The teams were able to start playing a little before 7 p.m. under cloudy skies with gusty winds.

Partway through the game there was a brief pause, not from the weather, as the Malden team gathered near their dugout with a visitor.

The umpire walked over to the Bedford bench and informed the visitors, “That’s Senator Markey.”

When the Bedford team got up to bat in the next half inning, the Senator walked over to say hello and take a picture. Markey was born in and still resides in Malden. He said he was driving by when he saw the ballgame and stopped to watch.

Bedford Senior Babe Ruth plays 11 more games in the regular season, with home games at Bedford High School “A” field on July 7, 8, 14, 16, 21, and 23. Sunday games start at 5 p.m., midweek games start at 5:45 p.m.
