Letter to the Editor: A Thank You for Support of Scholarships

Submitted by Shirley Kring, President, CSF of Bedford Dollars for Scholars

On Tuesday evening May 28, Bedford Dollars for Scholars scholarship awards were presented to 136 graduating seniors during a ceremony at Bedford High School. The event was recorded by Bedford TV and will be available through our website www.bedfordma.dollarsforscholars.org . This year we awarded $172.1K in scholarships to a record number of students.  Scholarship funds are contributed by local residents, professionals, businesses, and organizations.  A major source of funding is the annual mail-a-thon fund drive organized by Bedford Dollars for Scholars and prepared by student volunteers.  A growing number of scholarships have been established by Bedford High School class reunions as well as other scholarships which honor, or are in memory of, an individual or family. Money is also raised through a variety of other community activities, such as Bedford Day and Trivia Night fundraisers.

Any senior graduating from Bedford High School, or any Bedford, MA or Hanscom Air Force Base resident graduating from another secondary school, completing home schooling, or completing GED requirements may apply. Scholarship recipients may attend a four-year college, two-year college, or technical or vocational school.  We seek to provide financial aid to as large and diverse a range of deserving students as possible.  Awards are granted based on merit, with the amount determined by need.  “Merit” can include academic, athletic, artistic, interpersonal, civic, and community achievements.  Our objective is to increase opportunities for students who may otherwise have difficulty paying for higher education to achieve their goals.

Our award recipients consistently tell us they are honored and grateful for the support of their community.  This unwavering support has resulted in almost $3.5 million in funds raised to provide scholarships for nearly 3,650 students over the past 59 years.  We look forward to celebrating our 60th anniversary next year. Look for exciting upcoming events this fall and in 2025 celebrating this tremendous community landmark.

I also extend my personal thanks to our board members and volunteers who put in countless hours all year to ensure the success of this program.  As we look ahead to our 60th anniversary, we need additional volunteers to help us continue this important work.  For more information, please contact us at [email protected] .

On behalf of the Bedford Dollars for Scholars Board and all our scholarship recipients, we most gratefully thank our community for your continuing support.
