Bedford Tree Master Plan Committee to Host Public Forums

Staff photo by Wayne Braverman

The ad hoc Tree Master Plan Committee will be hosting two public forums in June to discuss the Bedford Tree Master Plan and gather feedback from the public.

The forums will be held:

  • 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4 in the Reed Room.
  • 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 virtually. Zoom details will be posted on the town’s calendar.

Presentations will provide information on community/urban forestry, the purpose of a tree master plan, updates on the planning process including a timeline and future opportunities to get involved.

There will be an interactive element to determine community priorities for the project, understand common challenges, discuss possible incentives, identify possible locations for additional trees, and more.

I am going to try my hardest to make this meeting. Identifying, preserving existing specimen trees and encouraging the planting of new trees for future generations is a win,win for the town.It would be nice for Bedford citizens to be able to nominate specific trees or tracts for special protection.I know of a beautiful old white oak tree in the Jordan Conservation Area that Massport had labeled for topping off for flights into Hanscom.I fought for this tree to be properly pruned to preserve it’s health and with the oversight of the Conservation Committee and particularly Lauri Eggert, the tree was saved from a harmful topping off procedure. There should be a registry of special old growth trees that when threatened require a review of alternate options to cutting down..
