Significant work on expansion of the so-called Morningside section of Shawsheen Cemetery is scheduled to start next week.
“Tree clearing and grubbing – stump and debris removal – will take three to five days and will entail large equipment and trucks in an out of the cemetery during the day,” said Department of Public Works Director David Manugian.
He emphasized that work will be halted during burials in the cemetery.
Morningside is at the eastern extremity of Shawsheen Cemetery. Plans call for two rows of 44-four-plot clusters for a total of 352 gravesites.
A long-term major expansion is planned for an area contiguous to the north side of the cemetery. As planning proceeds, Manugian said, “we decided to take advantage of existing roadways and add more graves around the perimeter.”
