What’s Bedford Thinking: Red Sox 2024

March 22, 2024

Opening Day of the Major League Baseball season is on Thursday, March 28. For the last two years, our beloved Red Sox have finished last. Gone are the days of Big Papi, Pedro Martinez, Mookie Betts, and Carl Yastrzemski. Not only didn’t last year’s team win, they really weren’t much fun to watch (though went 9-4 in Boston Red Sox v. NY Yankees games). Watching the Sox last year brought to mind Casey Stengel, who asked while managing the horrible Mets of the early 1960s, “Can’t anybody here play this game?” Ok, maybe the Red Sox weren’t that bad. The sobering news is it’s not clear they’re any better. The offseason was very uninspiring. The Red Sox didn’t sign any big free agents such as Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, or Shohei Ohtani, who is now with Mookie in LA.

However, as of now, they are undefeated and tied for first place. There might be some glimmers of hope. They have a new GM and Theo Epstein is back. They are also young and appear to have some real talent.  How optimistic are you about this year’s Red Sox?
