It is one month away from Tax Day. As of March, the IRS had already processed approximately 54 million returns – a little less than one-third of the total processed in all of 2023. That means two-thirds of the people are still working on them. But what does “working on your taxes” mean?
Do you use a software program and file yourself? There are many tax software packages to use, such as Turbo Tax, H&R Block, TaxSlayer, and many more. This year you have another option. In March, the IRS launched a new pilot program with their own free tax filing site, IRS Direct File. They are rolling the program out slowly to taxpayers in 12 states, including Massachusetts.
If you don’t want to file the return yourself, there are several retail companies such as H&R Block and Huntington Tax Partners here in Bedford as well as many more CPAs that can help. Or you can go old school and get your 1040 paper form and fill it out yourself. How do you prepare your tax return?
