Spring Special Event at the Bedford Compost & Recycling Center

February 28, 2024

Submitted by Trash & Recycling Administrator Liz Antanavica, Bedford Department of Public Works

The Bedford Department of Public Works will once again host its semi-annual collection of hard to recycle materials. The spring events will bring some minor changes and updates based on resident feedback gathered last fall.

The spring special collection event is free and will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at the Compost & Recycling Center, 108 Carlisle Rd. Residents are asked to stagger their arrival alphabetically by last name to avoid traffic impacts on Carlisle Road and Winterberry Way as follows:

  • A-D: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
  • E-K: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
  • L-Q: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • R-S: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • All residents: 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Please take note that this is slightly different than in years past in an effort to reduce wait times for those participating.

Also new this year, a limited number of early or late drop off appointments are available for those who are unable to attend the advertised event, beginning in March. Please visit the Special Events website to book an early or late drop-off appointment and for more details about early drop-off.

The DPW has put together a Flyer and FAQ document to help residents understand what to bring and what to leave at home. Please review these documents before attending: https://www.bedfordma.gov/809/Special-Collection-Events.

There is no general-purpose dumpster on site and residents will be asked to bring unacceptable materials back home with them.

Returning for Spring 2024, Electronics & Small Appliance recycling. Styrofoam, tires, and propane tanks will also be collected. These events help to keep valuable materials out of the waste stream and lessen the environmental burden of producing virgin materials.

Paper shredding will be offered separately from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15.

As in the past, a blue resident sticker or proof of residency is required to attend. Bedford residents only – no commercial waste or vehicles. Skip the check in line and pick up your free resident sticker at the DPW Building, 314 Great Rd. during business hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Please bring your vehicle registration with you when requesting a sticker.

Other resident drop-off areas of the Compost & Recycling Center will be open during the event, including yard waste, cardboard, glass, bulky rigid plastics, scrap metal, and textile recycling, as well as the Universal Waste shed for safe disposal of mercury-containing items, such as fluorescent bulbs and rechargeable batteries.

Have something else to get rid of? Check the Waste Wizard tool on the town’s website. Now with nearly 800 search terms, disposal advise is only a click away.

Questions can be directed to Liz Antanavica, Trash & Recycling Administrator, 781-275-7605, ext. 4261 or [email protected]. Office hours for this department are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
