Letter to the Editor: In Support of Dan Brosgol for Select Board

Submitted by Lauren Dorn-Jones

Nine years ago, before many people in Bedford had met him, I wrote a letter to support Dan Brosgol’s candidacy for an open School Committee seat. Three years ago, I penned another letter describing how he continued to deserve our support in his re-election bid. This year, I again feel compelled to describe why I enthusiastically support his candidacy for Select Board.

Dan is no longer an unknown commodity in Bedford. Through his three terms on the School Committee, and three terms as Chairperson, he has led with integrity, transparency, conviction, and humility. Dan seeks no attention, or glory, and has urged the district forward on multiple fronts with a constant focus on improvement, high standards, and supporting our students, teachers, and leaders.

At the same time, Dan’s reach in Bedford extends far beyond the meeting rooms of the School Committee. He has served on countless committees, continues to serve on the board of Bedford Babe Ruth, directed Kids’ Club for over four years, was on the board of Bedford TV, directed the Bedford Day 5K, and volunteers as a Bedford Santa… and that is only a partial list. No doubt you have also seen him at Starbucks in the mornings, or at youth sporting events, local fundraisers, or town festivities; Dan is one of the busiest people I have ever met and he clearly takes great joy in giving his time to support the Town and its organizations.

Not to be overlooked is Dan’s commitment to his family, including his amazing wife, Elizabeth, who is also involved in many Bedford organizations and teaches in the Bedford Public Schools, and their five children. Dan and Elizabeth both model for their children and for the community what it means to be a dedicated parent, coach, and partner.

When you talk to Dan about Bedford, and the issues facing the Town in the near future, it is clear that he has deep understanding of the challenges ahead. His perspective on the capital needs of the Town, our financial position, and the intersection of the budgetary needs across all Town departments is insightful. He cares deeply about the success and growth of the Town and would work to ensure that the programs we offer to residents of all ages continue to grow and evolve while still preserving the small-town feel that we all love about Bedford. He is also not afraid to take a contrary opinion, or vote “no” on something he disagrees with. I am confident he would bring a critical and discerning eye to the Select Board while representing the diverse views of the people he would represent.

To know Dan is to know that he is only interested in helping move things forward and needs no glory or validation for his efforts. That’s fine, but allow me to provide some validation on behalf of many people who know and respect him- Dan is a natural leader and we are fortunate that he is willing to serve as a Select Board member.

Please join me in voting for him on March 9.

Only question i have for Dan is whether he plans to wear sleeves during select board meetings. If the answer is NO, then he has my vote.
