The Bedford High School girls’ basketball team closed out the regular home season on Wednesday with a 66-34 win against overmatched Lowell Catholic. The girls are now 15-2. Their lone loss at home was by one point.

The Bucs play a makeup game on Friday at Greater Lowell Technical, then will compete in the Spartan Classic Tournament in Lynn beginning Sunday morning against Fontbonne Academy. Next Tuesday the girls will return to Lynn to face either Malden Catholic or Acton-Boxborough. Bedford has defeated each of those teams twice.

Lowell Catholic has won 10 games, but there would be no upset at BHS on Wednesday. The Crusaders had to digest these numbers: 21 points, nine rebounds, eight steals, six for six from the foul line. That was in Bedford’s first quarter.

The Bucs outscored Lowell Catholic, 19-0, in the second quarter, as Coach Jim DeBenedictis gave four of his reserves some minutes. By the end of the third quarter, five junior reserves were on the court for Bedford. The starters rested for the last 10-11 minutes.

Bedford starters shot higher than 50 percent from the field and sank all 10 of their foul shots. Freshman Ashley Cohen scored 15 points (13 in the third quarter) and collected six steals and five rebounds.

On Senior Night, the four members of the Class of 2024 sparkled. Cassie Morrison made all six of her shot attempts. Bridget Sheahan also had 12 points with six boards and four steals. Madison and Mackenzie Tierney added nine points each.

Defensively, the most impressive number is 31. That’s how many times the Crusaders turned the ball over – almost once per minute of play. They finished with 32 shot attempts; the Bucs fired up 55 shots.
