Bedford Council on Aging Newsletter – Feb. 2024

February 1, 2024

Submitted by COA Director Alison Cservenschi

February, the month of love. It is a time for Valentine’s Day and remembering those special relationships we have shared in our lives.

It is said that you do not grieve unless you have loved, so we remember those we love, or have loved, this month and those of us at the COA love are spending time with all of you.

In honor of love, here are some songs you might remember: “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Only You,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “The Great Pretender,” “In the Still of the Night,” “Tell Laura I Love Her” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.” Test yourself with recalling the singers and these groups of the past.

February is also Black History Month. The theme of Black History Month this year is “African Americans and the Arts.” In honor of this special month, we honor a special person of color. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May, 28, 2014) was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist. During her lifetime, she published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.

In honor of love, the Bedford COA will host its next LGBTQIA+ event at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. See page 10 in the latest COA newsletter for more on this growing and popular event.

The COA also celebrates Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon, on Thursday. Feb. 22. Please sign up and join this cultural celebration.

This month launches the 2024 tax season with the Bedford COA’s continued partnership with dedicated AARP tax volunteers, ready to assist with complimentary simple tax returns. Please see page 2 for more details on how to make an appointment and important dates to consider while gathering your important documents. The COA is grateful for this essential service that helps residents save hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees.

On closing, thank you all again for your participation with the Bedford COA’s programs and services. The COA looks forward to another great year and would LOVE to see you soon. Be well and enjoy this February.
