A Leap Day change: How about June 31st?

February 15, 2024

[Editor’s Note: This is a revised reprint of a The Bedford Scallion from Feb. 28, 2020 – during the last Leap Year, and brought back by popular demand. Will you join The Scallion’s mission?]

Every four years we get an extra day in February – yea!!   For all those people who were born on Feb. 29, I apologize. But really, who wants an extra day in February?  Of all the months to extend.

I think it’s time that we move the extra day to June. Everybody loves June.  It has nice weather, warm temperatures, and long days. That’s an extra day you could get excited about.

The reason the extra day ended up in February was a mathematical error by some ancient Roman.  Apparently, they just couldn’t  get the math to work with their new calendar and said, “meh, close enough, we will add an extra day every so often.” Living in southern Italy, February seemed fine. And there you have it. Some mathematically-challenged Roman is the reason we get to endure February a little longer. I think it’s time we do something about it.

Join us in our futile, but noble goal called “The June 31st Movement.” Stay tuned for more information.
