While some people get up early on Black Friday to head out for holiday shopping, a gaggle of fourth grade girls from Bedford were readying themselves for Natick Travel Basketball’s “Turkey Shootout” tournament.

On a brisk and sunny morning, Bedford squared off against two tough opponents in Chelmsford and Needham, coming up short in both of those games. On Saturday morning, though, the girls played their best basketball of the weekend, coming away with an emphatic win against Natick.

The team is composed of 12 Bedford fourth graders: Ryan Baker, Davi Brosgol, Presley Doyle, Maeve Hollman, Lydia Johnson, Abigail Kirk, Elle McGinley, Clara McInnis, Maisie Minor, Penny Murphy, Maddie Oates, and Ava Savage. The girls’ travel team is led by Head Coach Michelle Savage, with help from Assistant Coaches Jenny Hollman, Jeff Doyle, and Mark McInnis.

According to Savage, the tournament was “a great conclusion to our preseason. Witnessing the girls unite and gel as a team was tremendously exciting and provided us with insights into our strengths and areas for growth.”

The MetroWest Basketball League season tips off this weekend for all 16 of Bedford Travel Basketball’s teams, including the fourth grade girls, who will play at Winchester High School on Sunday at 4:45 p.m.

For Savage, this is a season full of opportunity and she has some ambitious goals.

“We aspire to nurture qualities like strength, commitment, resilience, and kindness in these young women. Coaching these athletes is an absolute joy, and I look forward to an exciting season ahead!” she said.

With a schedule of 17 games between now and early March, the best has yet to come for this group of basketball players.
