For Bedford eighth graders who are interested in applying to Shawsheen Valley Technical High School applications are open now until the deadline of Thursday, Feb. 1. The school reports it has already received 365 applications from the five communities in its district – Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Tewksbury, and Wilmington-for the 340 seats in the class of 2028.
Currently, there are 39 Bedford students enrolled in the school, according to Nancy Asbedian who is Bedford’s representative on the Shawsheen Tech school committee. Brian O’Donnell, Bedford’s other representative, serves as vice-chair of the committee.
This is the current enrollment of Bedford students.
Grade 9 (Class of 2027) – 16 students
Grade 10 (Class of 2026) – 9 students
Grade 11 (Class of 2025) – 6 students
Grade 12 (Class of 2024) – 8 students
Asbedian said there are already 23 applicants for the Class of 2028, with almost eight full weeks before the application deadline.
According to the school, “The application process is comprehensive, taking into consideration various aspects of a student’s academic and personal history. Factors such as attendance, scholastic achievement in seventh and eighth grade, disciplinary record, a teacher or counselor recommendation, and results from an interview, contribute to the overall assessment. A detailed outline of the application process is available at www.ShawsheenTech.org/Admissions.
“As applications are reviewed, applicants will be numerically ranked based on the evaluation results. Students are encouraged to apply on a rolling basis until the Feb. 1 deadline to be considered in the first round of acceptance. Late applicants will be automatically placed on a waitlist along with those who did not secure a seat. Notifications will be sent to all applicants in March for both accepted and waitlisted status.”
Superintendent Tony McIntosh recently said at a monthly staff meeting “We have double the applications we had at this time last year. I hope to see us reach 500 applicants.”
