Holiday Trash & Recycling Reminders from the DPW

Submitted by Bedford Department of Public Works

The holidays can be an especially busy time of year – and that often means full trash and recycling carts. Read on for key curbside collection dates, Recycling Center information and other helpful information from the DPW.

Key Dates

Curbside Trash and Recycling will be collected on a one-day delay following Christmas. Curbside Trash and Recycling Collection will occur on Tuesday Dec 26.

The Compost & Recycling Center will be open Dec 26-30 from 8AM-1PM. Residents may bring excess cardboard, glass bottles and jars and natural Christmas trees for drop off. The full site offerings can be found here.

Curbside collection of natural Christmas trees will occur beginning Monday Jan 8. Similar to yard waste collection, the Town’s Contractor will begin the route on Monday morning and visit each street once until the route is complete. This route may take several days to finish and is dependent on the volume of trees placed at the curbside. Residents should place trees at the curbside on Sunday evening. Remove all decorations and trees stands. Do not bag trees – trees in plastic bags will be left behind. For artificial trees, please schedule a bulky item pick up using the Waste Wizard.

Excess Trash?
Don’t get caught without overflow trash bags! Official Bedford overflow trash bags are sold at ACE Hardware, Stop & Shop and Whole Foods. Please place excess trash into an overflow bag and set it out next to (but not on top of) your black trash cart. Thank you for keeping the lid of your trash cart closed.

Try Composting! Residents can also participate in a variety of food waste diversion programs, including fee-based curbside service or free drop off to help reduce the amount of trash you throw away each week. Learn more about Bedford’s food waste composting programs here.

Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it. Sign up for reminders using the Waste Wizard tool to receive service alerts related to inclement weather delays and other unexpected issues. Visit www.bedfordma.gov/recycling and click the red “Get a reminder” box on the Calendar tab to sign up!

DPW would also like to remind residents that curbside trash and recycling carts must be 3 feet apart from any obstacles, including other carts. Thank you for setting your carts out with enough distance between them to allow the Town’s Contractor to access the carts. The lids on the wheeled carts should be completely closed and the handle and wheels should face away from the street.
