Girls to Face Chelmsford on Neutral Court

December 26, 2023

The 2-0 Bedford High School girls’ basketball team hopes to continue its season-opening success away from home beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday as the Bucs face Chelmsford High School in the opening round of a four-team holiday tournament at Tewksbury Memorial High School.

Bedford displayed strong two-way play last Friday at Newton South, defeating the Lions, 48-24. The Bucs bookended this game, outscoring the Lions, 11-2, in the opening quarter and 18-6 in the fourth period.

Head Coach Jim DeBenedictis used his entire roster to sustain constant defensive pressure against the taller Lions.

“We worked on our ‘D’ for the last week, and it paid off,” he said. “We used our defense to get offensive opportunities.”

Freshman Ashley Cohen again led the scoring, draining four three-point shots and totaling 14 points. Mackenzie Tierney added eight points, and seven other Buccaneers were in the scoring column.

“I am so impressed with the leadership of all of our senior captains (Cassie Morrison, Bridget Sheahan, Mackenzie and Madison Tierney),” DeBenedictis said. “Cassie plays with such intensity, and is so smart on the court. She is like having a coach on the court.”

“This was a great team effort,” he continued, pointing to the contributions of reserves Emma Dubrovsky, Tova Yerardi, and Caroline Luongo.
