An Obituary: Barry McGrory

December 29, 2023

Barry Albert McGrory, 67, of Bedford passed away on Dec. 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Barry was a devoted husband of 35 years to his wife Courtenay (Hand) McGrory. He was the beloved father of Aileen McGrory and Nishranth Gauthaman of Chelmsford, Shay and Matt Soda of Fayetteville, NC, and Lindsay Tufano of Litchfield, NH.

He was the treasured “Grumpy” of Maggie and Gabby Tufano. He was a cherished son to the late Edward and Alberta McGrory; son-in-law to Sandra and the late George Hand; and brother to Bernie, Bill, and the late Bob McGrory.

Barry grew up in Lexington, and graduated from Lexington High School. He started his career as an EMT with Bay State Ambulance and took pride in the lives he helped save. He then became a member of Laborers’ Union Local 22 and remained an active member until his retirement last year.

He was a labor manager at Commodore Builders for many years, and he finished his career as an educator in the Construction Craft Laborers program at Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School helping to shape the next generation of laborers.

No matter the job, and there were a variety, Barry had an excellent work ethic, ability to bring out the potential in the people and programs he worked with, and took joy in coming home to his family every day after a job well done.

Barry McGrory

Barry was a longstanding member of the Lexington Elks Club. He enjoyed camping and fishing, and loved planning and going on vacations. When he was younger, he spent his time riding horses and later graduated to motorcycles.

He found joy in gardening, working on his house, grilling, or walking in the woods with his dog, Marley.

He also had many good friends. Barry had a great sense of humor and a huge heart, and would go out of his way to help his loved ones. He was very much a family man who was extremely proud of his children’s accomplishments. He never failed to add humor to even the most difficult situations.

Barry lived a life of determination, courage, and dedication to family. He will be missed by so many and never forgotten.

A wake will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1 at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 The Great Road, Bedford. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Bedford Funeral Home, followed by the burial at Shawsheen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Canine Compassion Fund (http://www.caninecompassionfund.org/support-giving) or to the Massachusetts Elks State Vocational Scholarship Fund in memory of Barry McGrory (63 Bay State Rd., Lynnfield, MA, 01940).
