There are elderly and/or disabled folks in Bedford who need our help to stay in their homes. For this reason, Town Meeting voted in 2021 to accept a state law that allows taxpayers to voluntarily donate money to a fund that will help defray the real estate taxes of elderly or disabled persons of low income. The fund is overseen by Bedford’s Taxation Aid Committee, in accordance with state law.
According to the 2019 Bedford Housing Study, nearly 30 percent of Bedford homeowners over the age of 65 are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing. They are paying so much of their income on housing that they may have difficulty affording necessities such food, clothing, transportation, and medical care.
And, according to the 2018 Aging in Bedford Study, 32 percent of Bedford householders over the age of 65 have an annual income less than $50,000 (15 percent have income under $25,000).
Residents will soon receive an insert like the one below included with their third quarter FY 2024 real estate tax bills informing them how to make a voluntary donation.
The Taxation Aid Committee hopes you will be as generous as you can to help your elderly or disabled neighbors continue to enjoy living in the town they love.
BEDFORD TAXATION AID DONATION
The Town of Bedford has established a fund to assist qualified elderly or disabled residents with their real estate taxes. Donations to this fund may be eligible for a tax deduction and are in addition to your tax bill. If mailing, please send check or money order. Cash donations can be made at Town Hall to the Finance Department. Online contributions cannot be accepted at this time.
