Bedford Town Manager Matt Hanson said last week he hopes to appoint a new fire chief around the end of January.
Hanson said representatives of a professional firm that works with towns on public safety and human resources, MMA Consulting Group of Plymouth, are meeting with Bedford firefighters “to give all of them an opportunity to contribute” to the search criteria.
Those conversations will be followed by the posting of the position, Hanson said. The appointing authority is the town manager, with ratification by the Select Board.
The position has been vacant since the retirement of Fire Chief David Grunes in mid-August.
Paul Sheehan, a retired Cambridge deputy fire chief, is the Bedford department’s interim chief. His agreement expires at the end of December, but Hanson said Sheehan has agreed to continue until the appointment.
