Betsey Anderson will serve as moderator at the Special Town Meeting on Monday, Nov. 6.

Bedford Select Board Chair Bopha Malone confirmed the arrangement at the board’s regular meeting on Monday. The position has been vacant since the resignation of Mark Siegenthaler on Sept. 18.

Anderson, a former selectman who retired as moderator five years ago, was elected deputy moderator by Annual Town Meeting in March. According to the town charter, the deputy fills in “until the next Annual Town Meeting in the event of the Moderator’s absence.”

In an interview on Tuesday morning, she emphasized that she will not be a candidate for moderator on the March election ballot or at the subsequent Annual Town Meeting.

“Clearly, somebody needs to run,” she said.

Malone added that Jan Shepard, an attorney and former member of two charter and bylaw review committees, has offered to be Anderson’s assistant at the Special Town Meeting.
