Two Finalists Named in Search for Bedford’s Next Town Manager

Two municipal managers from smaller towns in the region are the finalists for the position of Bedford Town Manager.

The candidates are:

  • Matt Hanson: He has been the town manager in Tyngsborough since April 2017 and is a former two-term Chelmsford selectman. His career in public administration began in 2011 with an internship in the Lowell city manager’s office. He also worked as a project and procurement specialist in Westford before becoming assistant town administrator in Tyngsborough.
  • Greg Johnson: He has been the Maynard Town Administrator since July 2018. Johnson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was a fiscal policy analyst in the state administration and finance office beginning in September 2014. He actually followed Hanson as the Westford procurement specialist.

Bernard Lynch, head of the town’s search consultant, announced the finalists at the Select Board meeting late Monday afternoon. The Select Board will interview each of the finalists at its meeting next Monday, Aug. 14. Select Board Chair Bopha Malone said that the Select Board will make their final decision after the interviews next Monday.

Lynch said the initial pool of 30 applicants was reduced to seven semifinalists after the initial meeting of the Town Manager Search Committee. Two of those candidates subsequently withdrew from consideration.

After two sessions of interviews, the screeners recommended three finalists, one of whom decided to withdraw.

Lynch said one quality that the committee recognized in the finalists was “the ability to bring together people with different ideas and different approaches to problems and develop consensus.”
