An Obituary: Phyllis C. Doherty

Phyllis C. Doherty, 88, of Bedford, died on July 27, 2023.

Phyllis Doherty was the eldest of three daughters of the late Augustus and Mary (Mashett) Cardamone of Conshohocken, PA. She was raised in Conshohocken, where she attended school and then received her Bachelor of Science in Education from West Chester State Teachers College in Pennsylvania.

In 1959, Phyllis met William E. Doherty, Jr. and they were married in June 1960. In 1962, they moved to Bedford, where they raised their four children. For a brief time, Phyllis worked as a first-grade teacher, but, after being home to raise her children, she went back to work at Automatic Data Processing, where she worked for many years until her retirement.

Phyllis loved traveling to Europe, especially to Italy, where her family was originally from. A highlight of her life was studying abroad for five weeks as an adult student at the University of Siena in Italy. She was involved in a local Italian language and reading group and in the Massachusetts chapter of the American Association of University Women.

In 2017, Phyllis moved to the Carleton-Willard Village and enjoyed being with friends and participating in activities there. She was predeceased by her husband in 2019.

Phyllis is survived by her children, William E. Doherty III of Ayer, Brian J. Doherty and his wife Susan of San Diego, CA, Phyllis D. Lindsay and her husband William of Plymouth and James D. Doherty and his wife Tracy of Medfield, as well as her grandchildren, Rowena, Kelly, Sean, Emer and Liam, and her sisters, Claire Lepera of PA and Bernadette Durkin of MD.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5. Interment to follow at Shawsheen Cemetery.
