Panel Narrows Bedford Town Manager Candidates List to Seven

The Town Manager Screening Committee has quickly narrowed the pool of candidates from 29 to seven.

Paul Mortenson said at the July 10 board meeting that those candidates will be interviewed and four finalists will emerge around the end of the month. Mortenson and Bopha Malone are the Select Board members of the seven-member panel.

The process takes place behind closed doors until the selection of the finalists, who will meet with the Select Board in public session in August. The Select Board has said that it hopes the new Town Manager takes command in October.

The screening committee is working with professionals from Community Paradigm Associates of Plymouth, an executive recruitment consulting firm that specializes in municipal leadership. Mortenson told the board that according to the consultant, the average number of applications for a position such as this is 20 to 25.

The Town Manager search was precipitated by the resignation of Sarah Stanton in March. She accepted a senior management position with a state agency.

Colleen Doyle, who was Assistant Town Manager for Human Resources and Administration, is serving as interim town manager. Doyle did not apply for the permanent position.
