Letter to the Editor: Recent Treatment of Volunteers in Town

Submitted by Gail Hartwell

The recruiting email I received yesterday soliciting residents to serve as Town Committee volunteers could not have been more poorly timed. After seeing how Alice Sun, Erica Liu, and Stephen Steele were treated last week, I wonder why anyone would want to give their precious time to serve as a volunteer in this town. It is so sad to see it becoming more and more common that those who hold inconvenient viewpoints will not be tolerated but will be publicly scolded and lectured.

I wish the Finance Committee interviews had been broadcast on Bedford TV and trust that the continuance on July 27 [Editors Note: The next meeting will be July 25] will be taped. I truly appreciate all the time and effort that Liu & Steele have sacrificed and apologize for the way they were treated. They defended their positions (as did Alice Sun) impressively – and with dignity. I know there were two citizens that received permission to tape the hearing and hope they will post their videos so that everyone has the chance to witness that meeting and draw their own conclusions. And then, come to the meeting next Thursday at 7 p.m.

[Editors Note: The next meeting is expected Tuesday, July 25 at 7pm at Town Hall] to see for yourselves what is being done in our name.
