A longtime tenant in the shopping center at 287 The Great Road plans to expand into a larger adjacent space that has been vacant for one-and-a-half years.

Olde Bedford Package Store hopes to be operating by the holiday season in the former Paper Store, according to the manager, Mateus Fagundes. The stores are in the complex known as the Great Road Shopping Center.

On Monday, the Select Board approved the new storefront location as well as a change of name to Bedford One-Stop Liquors. The changes now must be approved by the state Alcohol Beverage Control Commission.

The Paper Store, a junior anchor with about 12,000 square feet of area, closed in January 2022 – a year after the departure of Home Goods, which remains empty.

Fagundes said the store owner has been negotiating with shopping center management for about a year. He said management hopes to begin construction before the end of August. The current premises will be vacated.

The expanded store will be in a better position to meet demand, Fagundes said. Tastes have changed, he said; people who shop for wine now employ the same selectivity as when buying clothing.

Bedford Package Store moved to the Great Road Shopping Center more than a decade ago from the building at the corner of The Great and South roads.
