Superintendent’s Update – June 9

Superintendent Conrad’s weekly update for June 9, 2023.

Davis Town 2023

Davis Town 2023 was a huge success!  As part of our social studies curriculum in the Bedford Public Schools, the Kindergarteners learn what it means to be a community, what are the places in a community, and who are the members of our community. Most importantly, they develop an understanding of the interconnectedness between businesses, programs, and community members. In the culmination of a year of learning, each Kindergarten classroom was turned into a functioning pretend business. The students had full control over what business their classroom became and for two days the businesses were open for visitors like a real town- Davis Town!

Kindergarteners collaborate to decide on their business and what visitors will do at that business.  They designed the physical space, and they determined the roles needed for the business to function.   Davis Town was open for businesses on June 1st and 2nd and students and visitors enjoyed the Health Club, Aquarium, Pet Hospital, Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation, and the Toy Store.  We are very proud of their innovation,  creativity, and dedication to hard work!

Eighth-Grade Moving On Ceremony

The 8th grade Moving On ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Sabourin football field in Bedford at 5:00 PM. Parents, guardians, caregivers, and extended family are invited to attend. Following the ceremony there will be an 8th-grade students-only cookout with games and music in the rear parking lot/fields of JGMS from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. The events will be luau/beach themed, and we encourage all who attend to dress in festive attire and bring a blanket on which to sit. If there is inclement weather, the ceremony and party will be held inside JGMS (with limited capacity for the ceremony). The ceremony will be simulcast on Bedford TV. For more information please email [email protected]

Lane School Challenge Day

The Lane School held its annual Field Day for Grades 3 and 4 this week. The students had a blast! The highlight of the event was definitely the chance for our enthusiastic students to dunk the staff in the dunk tank. Laughter filled the air as the students aimed for the target and sent their teachers and school staff into the water. In addition to the dunk tank, there were plenty of other fun (and wet) games that kept the children entertained throughout the day. The students had a fantastic time getting soaked and embracing the spirit of friendly competition. We would like to express our gratitude to Ms. Post and Mr. Smith and the many parents who contributed to making this Field Day a memorable and joyous event. Thank you for your continued support!

Race to the Base

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, the HAFB Women’s Forum and Hanscom Middle School hosted twenty BHS students on base. The day allowed our students to see what happens on the base on a day-to-day basis. Thank you to Colonel Taona Enriquez and her staff for coordinating with  BHS Counselor Brian DeChellis for coordinating this event. To read more about the day please navigate to the article BHS Students Introduced to Hanscom AFB mission, people by Mark Wyatt of the 66th Air Base Group Public Affairs Department.

Lane School Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad at Lane School is open to any interested 5th grader. This year, we had 70 students participate, and all 5th-grade classes were represented. Our team won the highest team award possible, with a score in the top 10% of all participating teams (3,919 teams internationally) from grades 4 through 6. Out of our 70 Lane School Math Olympians, 59 students received individual awards, meaning they had scores in the top 50% of all participants (over 100,000 individuals participated internationally) or higher. I hope all students, whether they won an individual award or not, feel proud that they tried something different like a math competition, and hopefully learned some new problem-solving strategies.
