Both Bedford High School tennis teams were victorious in their initial competition of the 2023 MIAA state tournament on Wednesday.
The fourth-seeded boys’ team made quick work of their Division 3 opponent, Groton-Dunstable. Senior Adam Capabianco, first singles; sophomore Spencer Goss, second singles; and freshman Rylan Nichols, third singles, each was victorious by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
The doubles teams, Logan Cox and Akira Ung, first doubles, and Jeremy Gu and Leo Natalizzio, second doubles – all sophomores – both shut out their opposition, 6-0, 6-0.
Coach John Geilfuss said the team will host the winner of Thursday’s contest between Dedham and Hanover.
The girls defeated North High School of Worcester in a Division 2 play-in match, 5-0.
Senior Co-Captains Danielle DiGangi and Kate Heller were successful in first and second singles, 6-0, 6-3, and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Sophomore Ruby Brennan breezed in her third singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
The first doubles pair of juniors Taylor Anderson and Ezgi Yener won, 6-3, 6-4, and the second doubles team of Corinna Klein and Karen Navon, also juniors, dominated with a shutout, 6-0, 6-0.
The girls will next face seventh-seeded Scituate. Coach Ben Guth said his team, “well-seasoned” by competing in the Dual County League, is looking forward to the challenge.
