As we honor the brave souls who gave their lives for our country this Memorial Day, we thought it would be helpful to explain the various memorials throughout our town – where they are and whom they honor. We wrote a story about this few years ago:  As Bedford Prepares for Memorial Day, Visit the Town’s War Memorials, The Bedford Citizen – May 21, 2021. In this podcast, we talked with the people who can tell you the stories behind the memorials:

Sharon MacDonald explains the history of the Old Burying Ground on Springs Road.

Then we moved down the Great Road and visit Shawsheen Cemetery. Here, Don Corey gives a brief history of the cemetery and talks about Bedford during the Civil War. And then we headed to the Common and discussed the World War I memorial boulder. We have a clip from a speech that Lee Yates gave, putting the magnitude of WWI into perspective.

Next we move to Veterans Park across the street from the Whole Foods plaza and hear from former Select Board member Joe Piantedosi.

Fallen Heroes Memorial

Next, we go to Mudge Way and hear from OC O’Connor to talk about the memorials in front of the High School as well as the John A. Hart – Travis D. Desiato Bridge crossing the Concord River on Route 225.

We end the tour at Springs Brook Park, location of the  9/11 Memorial Garden that honors those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
