BHS Playwright’s Festival Showcases Talent and Creativity – May 4

April 27, 2023

Bedford High School’s fourth annual Playwright’s Festival will be held on Thursday evening, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the BHS auditorium.

BHS students had the opportunity to write, direct, design, and/or act in their own 10-minute plays to be performed at the festival. Each play went through a workshop and rehearsal process in previous months, allowing students to immerse themselves in the world of playwriting and production. Writer Cate Galante describes the Festival as “a great opportunity for students to express themselves and have a new level of creative freedom.”

Twenty-three students are involved in this year’s Playwright’s Festival, participating as writers, directors, designers, and actors. This year’s student writers are Alex Coyman, Carolyn Crews, Charlie Desjardins, Cate Galante, Rachel Gould, Dasha Kerov, Connor McClung, John Mitchell, Shannon Sullivan, and Emily Zhu. Directors, designers, and actors include Iskra Arreaga, Verna Bowlan, Maggie Chessman, Dylan DeJesus, Yoana Dimitrova, Eve Fombu, Laura Fonseca-Morlock, Dhara Kaushik, Evan Kelly, Jennie Noh, Francesca Pellegrino, Emma Purtell, and Healy Weisman. Various writers are also featured as actors, and many of these students are involved in other BHS theater department activities, including spring musicals, fall plays, a capella groups, and curricular chorus ensembles.

Ten student-written plays are featured this year, and audience members will have the opportunity to ask writers and directors specific questions about their process in an optional talk-back session with the students at the conclusion of the performances.

The May 4 festival is free and open to the public. This will be the only performance. No ticket reservation is necessary. Come cheer on these emerging talents!
