Fin Com Chair Stephen Carluccio Resigns

September 8, 2022

The chair of the Finance Committee announced his immediate resignation Thursday evening, explaining that anticipated personal and professional demands will preclude him from carrying out his responsibilities.

Steve Carluccio, in an email to almost three dozen board and committee members and town department heads, wrote that “given the high level of interest from extremely qualified persons that was evident during the Finance Committee Appointing Authority’s work over the summer, it became obvious to me that it was the right time for me, and the town, to step down from involvement on the Finance Committee.”

In summarizing his 12-year committee career, Carluccio noted that “there has generally been a relative ease and high level of collegial cooperation in the working relationships between all the boards and committees and the town employees and departments. I attribute this type of working environment as a vital component of Bedford’s success in being a historically well-run and operated town.”

“However,” he continued, “over the last few years, my experience at times working with some members of the Select Board and town manager’s office has not always had the same ease or always been as productive, and at times there has even been a bit of acrimony. I still believe the Town has reached excellent consensus decisions, but the effort has increased and become more stressed in the current environment than in the past.”

“This type of healthy and highly productive working relationship still is the goal for all involved, and I have personally experienced no change in this working environment in most instances, especially in dealings with the School Committee, School Department, and Town Finance Department.”

Carluccio noted that within the next year he expects to have a hip replacement and undertake additional professional demands that will include travel.

Also, “due to some very recent developments, members of my family are going to spend larger portions of the next year outside of Massachusetts than I was anticipating; and continuing on the Finance Committee would inhibit my ability to spend meaningful time with them more than I am willing to sacrifice under the circumstances.”

Elizabeth McClung is vice chair of the committee. The chair, along with the Select Board chair and moderator, constitute the appointing authority.

“I also plan to use the limited time I have to focus on town affairs, to stay involved as a town resident and town meeting member and encourage others to do the same,” Carluccio wrote.
