Half-Million-Dollar Truck to Join DPW Inventory

July 20, 2022

The Select Board Monday approved the purchase of one of the most expensive items in the town’s vehicle inventory.

At a cost of $494,744, the new sewer vacuum truck won’t be ready for delivery for another year.

A vacuum truck handles large-scale cleanups in the sewer system as well as other suction needs. The purchase was approved by Annual Town Meeting as a bonded expense.

Town Meeting was advised that the existing vacuum truck “needs regular repairs and is out of commission frequently, forcing the town to rent a substitute truck at significant cost.” Monthly rental will continue as needed until the new equipment arrives.

Karen Kennedy, information and procurement analyst for the Department of Public Works, pointed out in a memo that “The Greater Boston Police Council Metropolitan Area Planning Council Cooperative Purchasing Program is being utilized for this purchase.”

The town is buying the truck from a local dealer, Taylor and Lloyd, Inc., 8 Railroad Ave., which “met all specifications and needs of the department,” Kennedy wrote. The town will receive $5,000 in trade for the old vacuum truck.
