The public is invited to mark Independence Day next Monday at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park when Jon O’Connor will read the Declaration of Independence.
“This will be the fifth annual” reading, said O’Connor, who noted that long-time Bedford Minuteman John Filios established the tradition. Filios, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, died in 2018 at the age of 101.
O’Connor, immediate past commander of American Legion Post 221 and active as a former member of the Patriotic Holiday Committee, said he will re-enact the reading near the Patriot statue on the west side of the park.
“We encourage any and all residents to be with us on the Fourth at 10 a.m., if only to catch a glimpse and share the sentiment of what such an important declaration against tyranny must have meant back in the day,” O’Connor said.
He added, “We all know just how significant a sign of freedom the Bedford Flag was as the first flag of the colonies carried into battle back on April 19, 1775, by our town Minutemen.”
