Robert Avery Barton passed away on May 20, 2022. Judge Barton graduated from Boston Latin School, Dartmouth College, and Boston University School of Law. During his service in the US Marine Corps, he was a defense counsel in General Court-Martial proceedings.
Appointed as an assistant district attorney in 1959, he was a prosecutor for four years before joining F. Lee Bailey’s practice, then opening his own law office, trying eight first-degree murder defendants. Appointed to the Superior Court bench by Governor Michael Dukakis, Judge Barton served until the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Amidst a busy career, Judge Barton’s family always came first with family meals, sports, excursions, and vacations.
