St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will host a concert of Old Time music on the evening of Saturday, June 4. Income from the fundraiser will benefit St. Paul’s Haiti Mission partnerships. Tickets are available online.

Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the concert will begin at 7 pm, in the sanctuary. The windows will be open and fans will help to improve air circulation. Masks are required during the evening, except when eating.

An intermission between sets will offer refreshments, a chance to buy raffle tickets, and Haitian art. Weather-permitting, intermission will take place in the church’s courtyard.

Income from the Old Time music fundraiser will support St. Paul’s partners in Haiti: FSIL, the first four-year baccalaureate school of nursing in Haiti; FSRL, an occupational and physical therapy program; and the Children’s Nutrition Project.

St. Paul’s mission to Haiti began in 2013, first in clinics near Leogane, an area hard hit by the 2010 earthquake.  The parish’s commitment has evolved to support local efforts able to offer year-round improvements in health care by Haitian providers.

About the Old Time Musicians

Alan Kaufman/fiddle : Alan Kaufman is an award winning fiddler, yodeler, teacher, published author, and storyteller who has made his home in the eastern Massachusetts area since 1997 and  has become a fixture of the local old-time music scene there.  For the last 20 years he has hosted and led old-time jams at bars in the Boston area. He is also an in-demand teacher of the fiddle and mandolin.

Ruth Rappaport/guitar: Ruth Rappaport grew up in New York, raised by folk and country music enthusiasts. A love of Appalachian music went with her to upstate New York and later to Boston. Ruth’s skilled rhythm guitar and fine voice have supported some of today’s best fiddlers and string bands, and she is a major presence in Boston’s Old-Time music scene.

Joel Wennerstrom/banjo: Joel  Wennerstrom plays clawhammer banjo and guitar for contra and square dances in the New England area. His playing is featured on various recordings, including Hammer & String’s “The Girl Who Broke My Heart” with Rhys Jones and Cleek Shrey, “The Pleasure of Your Company” with Harry Bolick, and “All in Good Time”, with Alan Kaufman and Don Stratton.  Joel is an industrial designer and moved to Boston in 2013 to design car seats for children.

Gian Criscitiello/bass: Gian Criscitiello learned to play string bass at Alan Kaufman’s jam sessions, sounding like a pro almost from the start because of years of playing the cello. Besides his regular attendance at the Burren old-time jam sessions, Gian often plays bass with Alan and other Boston area old-time musicians. Gian is also the bass player for Bedford’s Stacy and the Party.

Correction: The Old Time Music fundraiser will take place on Saturday, JUNE 4, not the 11th as originally stated. The Citizen regrets its error.
