The Bedford Education Foundation is proud to announce the funding of seven grants in our Fall 2021 grant cycle, totaling just over $13,000.  Congratulations to all of our grant recipients.

To date, the BEF has funded nearly $300,000 towards creative and innovative projects in the Bedford Public Schools. Thank you to our community partners and supporters for making this impact possible!

Innovative Design Through Play
Lane School

Lane’s Visual Art Teacher Jennifer Ferrari was awarded $135 to enhance the art room’s (de)Construction Zone by adding three sets of magnetic building tiles. This project will diversify the types of building materials available to Lane students and encourage play, exploration, and development of media knowledge/architectural skill.

John Glenn Middle School

JGMS Tech Ed teacher Lisa Morrison was awarded
$2,100 to purchase six monitors to create multimedia tables for students to use during their STEM (Tech Ed) class. The project will increase student collaboration, opportunities for students to articulate what they are doing and why, and opportunities for students to see how others problem solve.

Jennifer De Leon Author Visit
Bedford High School

BHS Librarian Christine Walker Magoon was awarded $3,580 to host Jennifer De Leon for a full day author visit. De Leon’s popular YA novel “Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From” follows a Latinx protagonist and her experience in the METCO program. The project’s goals are to support literacy, equity and diversity, and student health and well- being.

March Madness Championship Of Books
Bedford High School

The BEF is funding BHS’s March Madness Championship of Books 2022! The book challenge will operate like the NCAA basketball tournament, with 16 diverse and popular YA books matched up in a single-elimination format until the final game, when one “Best Book” will be awarded. We are excited to help support this event, which will be in-person for the first time! With a grant award of $1,030, this cooperative literacy program will celebrate reading and promote literacy throughout BHS.

Alphabet Sound Teaching Tools
Davis School

ELL teacher Tricia White was awarded $2,060 to purchase alphabet teaching tubs for the entire kindergarten team. This project will help our youngest learners to acquire their letter name and sound knowledge, help students gain understanding by giving them a visual and a tactile object, and expand the vocabulary of those students who are English Language Learners.

Maker Space
Lane School

Teachers Kathryn O’Brien and Elissa DeNunzio were awarded $870 to create a makerspace for their 3rd grade students. The project will challenge students to learn through hands-on experiences, be creative and apply learning strategies, and learn to make failure into a learning experience.

Sensory Play Learning Materials
Davis School

Kindergarten teachers Jaclyn Bentinck-Smith and Carol Wait were awarded $3,390 for sensory play learning materials. By using sight, sound, and touch, this project will teach students through exploring, asking curious questions, developing creative solutions, and collaborating with their peers. Students will build fine motor skills, practice mindfulness activities, and develop language skills.
