Student Voices at The Bedford Citizen: Wrinkles in Time

February 21, 2022

The Bedford Citizen has published a feature column for some time with articles written by local high school and college students.  To date about a dozen students have submitted articles on everything from gun control to the impact of budget sequestration to reflections on graduation.  Their work has been thoughtful and heartfelt.

Starting this week, The Bedford Citizen offers a series of three articles from student writers we have published previously. Watch The Citizen on Tuesday—Ryan Doucette (BHS Class of 2021);  on Wednesday—Lily Nemirovsky (BHS Class of 2020); and on Thursday—Brooke Shamon (BHS Class of 2019).  Each writer comments on the impact of the pandemic on their college life.

There is a wariness and a weariness to their observations.  These are young people whose expectations about life after graduation were dramatically impacted by Covid-19.  They have learned to cope with uncertainty and to be ready to respond at a moment’s notice to having a positive test or finding out their roommate did.  They know about remote, hybrid, and in-class instruction and that just because a semester starts out one way it may not end up that way.  Their resilience is admirable, maybe even inspirational.

But the weariness comes through.  Lily Nemirovsky starts out her piece, “The adage, two steps forward and one back has never felt more applicable.”  Brooke Shamon observes, “Little did I realize…nothing would prepare me for the semester ahead.”  And Ryan Doucette talks about “…the worrisome reality of what role the Covid-19 pandemic would have…on my first set of college memories.”  Any reader will resonate with these writers – we are all tired.  But like them, we are hanging in there and keep trying to make the best of it.

The Bedford Citizen wants to hear more from our student community – high school, college, or post-high school experience.  If you’d like more information on how to submit work for consideration, please contact Ginni Spencer at [email protected].
