Letter to the Editor: Regarding Kelly Horton, Candidate for School Committee

~ Submitted by Shaun Kennery

I write this letter in support of Kelly Horton for School Committee.

I got a front row seat to Kelly’s leadership effectiveness in the 2020-2021 school year.  She was up front and center, leading the charge and giving a voice to hundreds of parents who wanted kids to safely return to classrooms fulltime. Kelly spent hours tirelessly gathering feedback from parents and listening to the various concerns and issues pertaining to each child’s educational and social emotional struggles. She then took it upon herself to raise and speak to these concerns while creating a safe haven for other parents to do the same. Through leading by example, Kelly encouraged other parents to provide their critical perspectives to the administration and school committee. She was respectful and relentless in her advocacy, representing parents who may not have been able or comfortable articulating the way Kelly could.  I am one of those parents and remain so thankful for her efforts then and her continued efforts now.

This is the epitome of leadership, taking the bull by the horns.  Kelly is task oriented, a problem solver, and her persistency and determination for excellence is second to none.  It’s that passion and “Can Do” attitude that draws me in as an avid supporter.

I work in town and have twins in the 4th grade.  During the pandemic, we have been fortunate with great teachers, and I’m extremely proud of how my children have navigated these challenging times. That being said, kids, and people in general, are resilient until they are not! We will all bear scars from this. Mental health and overall well-being must be a priority for all of us.

This will be one of Kelly’ top priorities if elected to the school committee.  She knows the time is now to equip teachers and staff with the necessary tools to identify children that are struggling and provide them with the help and support they need. We will not know for years to come the true impact of the pandemic on our children, but what we can do is choose to surround our children with leaders that have the capability and follow through that Kelly Horton does.  I urge you to learn more about Kelly at HortonForBedford.com; I’m hopeful that you will join me in support of her.
