Letter to the Editor:  Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

~ Submitted by Nancy Wolk

I am writing in support of Emily Mitchell for re-election to the Select Board. I’ve known Emily for many years and we have shared a set of Red Sox tickets for several years now. She once mentioned that her values are simple: take care of each other and don’t be a jerk. I only wish I could stick to those as well as she does. When she ran for the Select Board 3 years ago, I did take the time to see what she wanted to do and why.

Three years later, I can see she has accomplished much of what she set out to do.  The most visible change was to change the name of the Select Board. By committing to a gender-neutral name, Bedford welcomes all people to be involved in town politics. She has increased accessibility to the Select Board by having a public comment period at the Select Board meetings, and allowing materials to be available in advance. Bedford TV has been live-streaming the meetings during the pandemic.  Along with the Select Board, she’s looking for new ways to make the Town Meeting easier for people to attend.

I am also very happy to see the roles she has played in The Bedford Cultural District, working to make outdoor spaces more usable, encouraging outdoor eating so we can support our Bedford businesses safely during the pandemic. She supports the Energy and Sustainability Committee and is helping the town move towards the Net Zero goal. She’s a strong supporter of the new fire station and sees the need to get our firefighters state of the art equipment, and a practical building.

Emily supports inclusivity in our town including the newly created Disability Commission, menstrual products available in all town buildings and helping to bring the creation of Indigenous People’s Day to Bedford. We are better when we listen to all voices and try to find the most inclusive solutions for people.

I am confident that she will continue to do amazing work for the town. I encourage people to look at her campaign site: https://www.emilymitchellforbedford.org to learn more about Emily and how she’s been working for us on the Select Board. This way, you can see for yourself what Emily has done for the town and how she plans to continue working for a better Bedford.

*Please note that I am also a candidate for the Assessor’s Board. This is my own opinion and I am not part of any ticket in Bedford.
