Friday’s Storm ~ Snow, Sleet, or an Icy Mix?

February 5, 2022

Winter storms all have basic seasonal DNA, but it seems each has a unique personality.

Thus, Friday’s event in Bedford was best described as “tricky” by Director of Public Works David Manugian.

Bedford Police Traffic Enforcement Officer Thomas Devine said Saturday in an email, “There were a total of three crashes yesterday. There were no injuries reported to us. There were no other storm-related events.”

“There was not a lot of accumulation, but it was tricky,” Manugian said, citing “the significant change in weather from early morning to midday.”

“We were going from rain and temperatures above freezing to sleet and below freezing,” he described. “You couldn’t pre-treat roads because of the rain, so we were literally waiting with trucks full of salt for it to switch over. Then late in the morning, we started to get a bit of accumulation so we sent the plows out and tried to keep ahead of that.”

Manugian said there was no need to bring in outside contractors, but it was nevertheless a long day for the staff.

The precipitation was continuing, so “after the evening commute we made the decision to give our drivers a chance to get some rest and come back early this morning to clean stuff up,” he said. “We were burning through a lot of material and not being able to make progress.”

The weekend, he said, “gives us a chance to get things under control.” He added, “As always we appreciate people considering deferring trips they didn’t have to make.”
