It’s hard for some to believe that in Eastern Massachusetts, there are children who go to sleep on the floor or on a couch. But thanks to Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a national organization that builds and supplies beds for kids, they are getting their first bed.
Pastor John Castricum participated in an SHP project last summer with the Rotary Club of Bedford and had a great experience. “It was like a mini-mission trip;” he said, “SPH is delivering fifty beds a week to families in Eastern Massachusetts, and now has a challenge to provide beds for 500 Afghan refugees coming to Worcester. Our efforts will directly impact people in search of the basics of food and shelter.”
After talking about his first experience with church leaders, people got on board with the project. A crew of 25 members and friends of First Church went to the Sleep in Heavenly Peace warehouse in Littleton this past Saturday and ended up making seventeen beds. Beyond that, they got first-hand stories from a couple talking about sponsoring an Afghan family and the issues they are dealing with.
The whole experience opened up our hearts and minds to the needs of people not too far from Bedford. First Church looks forward to its second work date in March.
