Seven Starts & Seven Wins ~ BHS Girls Basketball, 34-23, Over Westford Academy

January 4, 2022

Senior Night is more than a month away, but the senior tri-captains dominated Tuesday as the Bedford High School Buccaneers won their seventh game in seven starts, 34-23, at home over Westford Academy.

Julia Dearing, Katherine Vaughan, and Allie Zorn combined for 19 points and 24 rebounds, and intense team defense did the rest. The Grey Ghosts turned the ball over 26 times.

The Bucs get a week off before resuming the schedule next Tuesday. They probably wish they were playing every night, as they have gotten off to the most successful start ever in girls’ basketball at BHS.

Both teams struggled offensively Tuesday, but the Bucs, with 10 offensive rebounds and all those steals, had many more chances.  They led by four at the quarter and held the Ghosts to two points in the second period.

The 20-9 halftime lead held up throughout the second half; Westford never got closer than eight.

Vaughan, playing for the first time in two weeks, looked fully recovered from a leg injury, moving smoothly with and without the ball and finishing with seven points and nine boards. Zorn scored five and pulled down nine rebounds; Dearing had four steals to go with seven points.

Westford came out firing in the second half with two consecutive baskets from outside the arc. But each one was matched by Sydney Poor.

The girls may spend some practice time at the foul line this week; they sank only four of 13 free throws against the Ghosts.
