Post-Holiday Trash Collection & Reminders

December 13, 2021

~ Submitted by Liz Antanavica, Refuse & Recycling Administrator

You’ve finished making merry and decking the halls. Now what to do with all that mess?

Trash/ Recycling pick up

Regular trash and recycling collection will occur on both Monday, Dec 27, and Monday, Jan 3. There is no delay in collection.

Recycling Reminders

The Holiday season comes with lots of new packaging options. Stick to the basics:

  • Only paper and cardboard; glass bottles and jars; plastic bottles, jars, jugs; and tubs; plus metal cans are acceptable curbside materials.
  • DO NOT bag recyclables.
  • NO plastic bags or other flexible plastics,
  • NO Styrofoam of any kind,
  • NO tanglers like ribbons, string lights, or twine.
  • Use the “Recyclopedia” tool at www.RecycleSmartMA.org or contact the Refuse & Recycling Administrator with your questions.

Cardboard drop-off

Thank you for recycling your cardboard. Residents can bring overflow cardboard to the Compost Site at 108 Carlisle Rd, during operating hours, including the Wednesday after Christmas, 12 Dec. 29, from 8 AM to 1 PM.

IMPORTANT: Please note, the dumpsters at the DPW, public schools, and other Town buildings are not for public use. The only public drop-off option is at the Compost Site, 108 Carlisle Rd. Any illegal dumping at the DPW is monitored by video surveillance and reported.

Christmas Tree collection

Natural Christmas trees will be collected curbside during the week of Jan. 10, 2022.

Residents should place trees at the curb, without obstructing any sidewalks or bike lanes, on Monday, Jan 10. Republic Services will begin collecting trees on Monday and finish collecting trees by the end of the week.

Please remove all plastic tree removal bags, decorations, tinsel, light strands, and tree stands. Trees will be chipped at the Compost Site; the plastic bag and any remaining decorations can be dangerous for DPW staff or problematic for the composting process.

Compost bins

Have an eco-friendly family member on your list this year?

Compost bins make a great gift. The DPW offers low-cost backyard compost bins for $45. Visit the DPW, 314 The Great Road, during business hours.

Black Earth Compost also offers gift-giving opportunities with pre-paid curbside compost subscriptions. Contact Black Earth at www.blackearthcompost.com for more information.
