Paper Shredding Event ~ Saturday, October 30 ~ at the Compost Center ~ also Collecting Fluorescent Lamps, Rechargeable Batteries & Propane Tanks

~ Submitted by Liz Antanavica, Bedford’s Refuse & Recycling Administrator

The Department of Public Works is holding a paper shredding event this Saturday, October 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. within the Compost Center at 108 Carlisle Road.

The event is free and open to Bedford residents only.

Compost Center stickers are required. Blue resident stickers can be obtained at the DPW office during business hours. Stickers will also be available at the event Saturday. Proof of residency is required in the form of a vehicle registration document or utility bill.

Paper Shredding is limited to five (5) boxes per car. No Binder clips, 3-ring binders, or spiral notebooks. Residents will not be permitted to watch their documents get shredded.

The DPW will also be accepting fluorescent lamps, rechargeable and sealed lead-acid batteries, and other items containing mercury. Please note: LED bulbs and alkaline batteries will not be accepted. Per MassDEP regulations, these items can be disposed of in the regular household trash.

Propane Tanks such as grill tanks and camping cylinders are also being collected.

Residents can continue to drop off fluorescent lamps, rechargeable and sealed lead acid batteries, and other items containing mercury in the foyer of the DPW building on Great Road. Moison’s Hardware is another option for properly disposing of fluorescent bulbs.

To avoid traffic backing up on Carlisle Road and Winterberry Way, the DPW is staggering the arrival times alphabetically by last name and asks that residents arrive at the appropriate hour.

Last name ~ Arrival time

  • A to F ~ 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • G to K ~ 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • L to O ~ 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • P to Z ~ 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Regularly Scheduled Saturday Drop-offs

Bedford residents will also be able to drop off cardboard, glass, yard waste, and tree debris from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.
