Select Board Okays Small Fee Increase for Disposing of Household Bulk Items

June 26, 2021

Small increases in fees for disposing of household bulk items go into effect Thursday.

The Select Board has approved the new charges, which are built into the town’s six-year solid-waste disposal contract with Republic Services. The agreement provides for a 6.5 percent annual increase.

Up until this current contract, the town absorbed the cost of collecting these items. But in response to the accelerating rise in disposal costs, town officials began charging.  The fees are a “pass-through,” as residents coordinate and pay directly through Republic.

Original implementation was scheduled for July 2020 but was delayed by six months because of the demands of the Covid-19 pandemic. Asked at the Select Board meeting about feedback from residents on the change in practice, DPW Director David Manugian said there were some discussions during the first three months, but since then it has been “pretty minimal.”

The categories and year-to-year charges are:

  • Small electronics: $15.98 to $17.02;
  • Tires: $15.98 to $17.02;
  • Appliances: $26.63 to $28.36;
  • Cathode-ray tubes and televisions up to two feet: $31.95 to $34.03;
  • Large metal items (no more than four feet and 50 pounds) $31.95 to $34.03;
  • Appliances with freon: $37.28 to $39.70;
  • CRTs and TVs larger than two feet: $42.60 to $45.37;
  • Console or projection style TVs or CRTs: $133.13 to $141.78

Manugian emphasized that there are alternatives to disposal of some of these categories, such as the DPW’s periodic collection days.

This is why people start dumping items in the woods or in dumpsters and then we get real pollution!
