Are We There Yet?

Applewood Books’ armchair (or on-the-road!) travel books are full of maps, facts, and games

Applewood Books, a local book publisher, is bringing back the road trip puzzle. Their new series Great American Road Trip Puzzle Book is a series of “road trip” puzzles.

Keeping kids entertained on long road trips was a generational challenge.  Before iPads, smartphones, and handheld video games, kids entertained themselves in the back seat with coloring books and puzzle books.

What do long car trips and our current shelter-in-place situation have in common? A lot actually. Games are an activity that not only entertain but often lead to discussions about parents’ own experiences growing up.

Here’s what the publisher says:

Carlisle, MA--Applewood Books, a Boston-area publisher, has today released its Great American Road Trip Puzzle Book series. With widespread social distancing around the country, people are longing to get out. Who doesn’t miss the open road?

This puzzle-book series is the perfect roadside distraction for the homebound traveler or some very antsy traveling companions. While you’re sheltering in place, why not take a virtual road trip and learn about America’s diverse roadside attractions and cultural sites?

The Great American Road Trip Puzzle Book series was designed to enhance a real road trip or help armchair travelers hit the virtual road.

The series features ten puzzle books: a 200-puzzle book with seven regional trips, a 100-puzzle book that circles the country, a 100-puzzle book of national parks, and seven additional 100-puzzle books, each focused more closely on a specific region—New England, the Northwest, the Mid-Atlantic states, the Midwest, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the West.

The order of the puzzles follows the starred stops on the map at the beginning of each road trip. The routes are circular, so readers can start anywhere along the route and experience the journey from wherever they like.

As a bonus, the books include other interesting general travel-related puzzles to entertain travelers between the stops.

Applewood’s founder Phil Zuckerman, recognizing the series fit with our current moment, shared, “Now is a time when a lot of us are wringing and washing our hands, worrying about everyone’s health, and wondering if we will even have a summer vacation. There’s a lot of isolation and staying home, and this series, originally intended for real travelers, provides a great way for people to keep busy and explore the country without leaving the house.”

The Great American Road Trip Puzzle Books are part of Applewood’s Grab a Pencil Press imprint, which features puzzle and activity books for all ages. The company is offering a free 25-puzzle sampler here: https://get.awb.com/take-a-test-drive
