Madelyn Anderson-LaPorte Receives Bedford Minuteman Company Citizenship Award

Madelyn Anderson-LaPorte, recipient of the 2020 Marion Bryan Citizenship Award, presented by the Bedford Minuteman Company

Despite the cancellation of Bedford’s annual Pole Capping Parade and Ceremony, the Bedford Minuteman Company awarded their Citizenship Award to Madelyn Anderson-LaPorte in a “virtual” ceremony on Saturday, April 11, 2020.

Captain Chuck Hacala explained that the full name of the award is the ‘Marion Bryan Citizenship Award, presented by the Bedford Minuteman Company.’

A long-serving teacher at Bedford High School and Bedford Middle School, Marion Bryan encouraged several generations of students to “Be a Good Citizen.”   Thanks to the technology of the day, Mrs. Bryan attended the virtual ceremony and congratulated Maddie for being such a fine example of a young citizen, noting “We are truly fortunate to have her in our community, and may her future be as bright and shining as is she.”

Captain Hacala read the following accolade, submitted by Maddie’s teachers::

“Maddie is a compassionate, thoughtful, and outgoing young woman.  She is a member of the National Honor Society at Bedford High School.  Beyond the classroom, she is a skilled musician, earning the Performing Arts Honor Award for playing the viola, and she is also a member of the Cross-Country Team.  Maddie enjoys serving the community as a member of Bedford High’s chapter of Amnesty International, and she has achieved the Bronze and Silver Awards in the Girl Scouts of America.  She also teaches Sunday school to preschoolers and works as a counselor at Bedford’s Summer Adventure.  The past two summers, Maddie has volunteered for the Appalachia Service Project helping with home improvements in that region.”

“For these accomplishments and more, we acknowledge your excellent citizenship, and present you with this gift.  In addition, Madelyn’s name has been added to the Marion Bryan Citizenship Award plaque, which is maintained in the Bedford High School Social Studies Department.”

Congratulations from your teachers, Maddie, and Huzzah from the Bedford Minuteman Company!  The ceremony ended with a rousing fife and drum rendition of Yankee Doodle, performed by the Bedford Minuteman Company musicians.
