Letter to the Editor: Bedford Offers a Buy-Back Program for Unwanted Guns

November 8, 2019

Submitted by Dawn Marshall

Bedford has what may be a unique program in the State for the buyback of unwanted guns and other weapons. Instead of the occasional Saturday morning event where people bring the weapons to the police department,  in Bedford, a police officer will come to your house to collect the weapon.

Bedford’s program offers multiple advantages. People are not carrying around weapons in their cars, often illegally if they are not properly licensed; there is no concern about unskilled individuals carrying weapons that might actually be loaded; and the program is always available.

Here is the formal notice:

Bedford, MA  has an ongoing gun buyback program, organized by the Bedford Police Department under Chief Robert Bongiorno.

If you have a gun, ammunition, knife, or other lethal weapons that you want to get rid of, please call 781-275-1212, the police general inquiry line, and tell them. They will come to your house to pick it up. Do not transport it to the police station yourself. If you wish, a payment will be made to you.
